A craftsman draws in hot wax on cloth by hand, or through a copper stamp called a canting and then dyes the fabric. The wax resists the dye. The wax is removed. What remains is a negative image of extraordinary precision, built from the logic of absence. The Dutch colonized Java for three centuries partly because of batik. They took it home, called it "Indian" print, and sold it to Europeans who had no idea where it came from.
