I've fallen in love with more than a few hetchels

I purchased these excellent old Eberhard-Faber "gold sticks" and two beautiful boxes of old chalks (also listed today) from a dealer at Brimfield who had found them all together--I'll never resist beautiful old art/school supplies

but it lies flat

Notebook with A Bit of American History and Lots of Calculations carving of kissing couple the best of its ilkOne of three 1870s notebooks today from a George Abbott of Boston, MA, each special in its own way. This small one begins with a list of the causes of the American Revolution, followed by a few lists of exports and imports, then latitudes and longitudes of major U. S. cities. Then a series of dense pages of math calculations, evolving into what feel to me almost like pure drawings, with a sort of cobweb of lines bracketing one problem from the next.
