and feels to me as if it ought to inspire a novel or a play or at least a poem about childhood and fantasy and confronting the existential void

including for how the entire right side of it opens like a door to reveal a pretty fabulously lithographed interior

Homemade ones like this have no turning parts; you just turn the whole thing to move the little bits of colored glass around inside, landing in different patterns. Not the most spectacular kaleidoscopic effects
