I have to think the subject was wandering about nearby as this was made

It features two wooden boxers

or in the wood shop or studio for supplies

I picked these three photographs out of a pile at the flea market yesterday because I thought they were really interesting--kind of like pre-Instagram still lives of assorted and carefully arranged antique objects

but this seems to be the mother of them all

C. 1830s Ink Silhouette of Woman in Original Frame wooden dog brooch I have to think theThe frame (with pretty little acorn at top holding a hanging ring) tells me that this inked silhouette dates to the 1830s or so, though probably once held glass, which is long gone. Thus, there is wear and aging to the painting and paper, including some loss to what appears to have been gold painted details on her hair and bodice. I kind of like the effect, lending it some extra aura, but with her quite prominent nose still very clearly pronounced!
