and perhaps a crown of red hair too

and has a peg post which allows it to fit perfectly into a hole on the board

The text reads "Playing with Pompey"; apparently Pompey was a popular dog name in the early 19th century, perhaps deriving from the famous dog of William the Silent, Prince of Orange, whose barking thwarted an assassination attempt!
