My guess is that it is a mitering tool of some sort

Preacher (?) on Doorstep, Lamont, Oklahoma, Antique Real Photo Postcard unusual antique splint basket 4 7/8" long x 1I'm assuming this man is a preacher, and that it is a bible held tightly in his grip, but I don't know for certain; I suppose he could be a door to door salesman! In any event, he certainly looks like a man on a mission, and to me the look on his face suggests he is contemplating his next move. I really love how he is framed by the four painted posts on the porch, with door and window behind, and also how the step down is cropped just out of the image
